From Wolfgang Commercial Painters to WCP Building Renewal

Why did we change or name from Wolfgang Commercial Painters to WCP Building Renewal? Here’s the story: For over two decades, we proudly served Vancouver’s property managers, building owners, and engineers as Wolfgang Commercial Painters—a commercial painting company that completed over 4,500 projects across Metro Vancouver. Through the warehouses, high-rises, commercial properties, and strata complexes we painted, we built a reputation as one of B.C.’s go-to companies for exterior and interior painting.

From schools and hospitals to iconic heritage buildings and office towers, we painted our way across Metro Vancouver and British Columbia. Along the way, we took on the largest warehouse complex in the region, landmark shopping centres, and more strata buildings than we can count. Heck, we even painted the world’s largest mural! We’ve worked with every major property management company and property group in Vancouver—treating every project as if it were our own and working hard to protect and beautify our clients’ buildings and homes.

So, after working so hard to build Wolfgang Commercial Painters why would we consider changing our name? Great question!

Why We Changed Our Name from Wolfgang Commercial Painters to WCP Building Renewal

As our reputation as a top-notch commercial painting contractor grew, clients began asking for more. Concrete repair, membranes, sealants, specialty coatings—we heard these requests regularly. At first, we offered referrals. But eventually, we leaned in, begain the process of educating our sales and operations team, trained our crews, to begin slowly adding more services.

Slowly, over years, our team learned the trade known as waterproofing and building restoration—a field that includes membrane and sealant work and typically, concrete repair. We started small, gaining confidence project by project, learning the technical, estimating, and most importantly, the production side of these services. Word spread among our property management and property group clients, and the service requests flooded in.

Our waterproofing and restoration projects grew larger and more complex. Eventually, we completed our first full high-rise building restoration project in Vancouver’s West End. Restoring a concrete high-rise from top to bottom: concrete repair, sealant and caulking replacement, membrane installations, anchor installations and railing work, flashing upgrades—you name it. Our confidence grew. From that project we took on a two-year restoration of the region’s largest casino complex, followed by a massive industrial facility in South Surrey.

At that point, five years after our first foray into this new market, most of our service requests involved some form of restoration or waterproofing. Each of our crews was now fully trained in concrete repair, sealant application, membrane systems, and waterproofing techniques.

The regions property managers and property groups, now looked to us for much more than painting, when their buildings needed full restoration and renewal, they gave us a call. It became clear that the tagline “commercial painting” and the brand Wolfgang Commercial Painters, no longer properly captured our essence and we wanted our name to reflect our full scope of services.

At the same time, we were hesitant to let go of the brand, Wolfgang Commercial Painters, we’d worked so hard to build—we didn’t want to alienate existing customers. For two years, we wrestled with the idea of a name change.

We considered the term “restoration,” but worried it might be confused with fire, flood, or emergency response. We batted around a number of ideas nothing was standing out. Then, while attending World of Concrete—the industry’s largest conference—we noticed a new term gaining traction: “renewal.” The moment we heard it, it clicked. That’s what we do. We renew buildings.

“Building Renewal” captures the essence of our work and the value we provide to clients. We renew and revitalize our clients’ most valuable assets long term. Building Renewal fits perfectly. Yet, we still struggled with letting go of Wolfgang. So, to honour our roots, where it all began, we introduced the acronym  “WCP,”  which is short for Wolfgang Commercial Painters. In that way, our new brand paid tribute to the past and signalled to the marketplace that painting is still a large part of what we do.

As such, WCP Building Renewal was born.

So, what does it mean to renew a warehouse?

Renewing a warehouse means replacing failed expansion joints and delaminated sealant at window perimeters. Along with repairing concrete spalls, delaminations, and rusted rebar below the concrete. Renewing and restoring a warehouse includes efflorescence, priming bare surfaces, and repainting concrete and metal surfaces throughout the building with eye-catching colour schemes.

How about a high-rise? How do we renew a 25-storey building?

It starts with access—using swing stage scaffolding or rope access, and when needed, we install anchors. From there, we replace failed sealants at windows, control joints, and cold joints. We remove deteriorated membranes and install new membrane systems, repairing concrete surfaces as needed. We inspect and repair railing fasteners, or when needed, we install entirely new railing systems. Finally, we apply high-performance coating and waterproofing systems to protect the building’s substrates for years to come.

And for strata complexes, townhomes, and condos?

We inspect and replace rotten wood, including siding, shingles and hardie. wash all surfaces with bleach treatment to remove mildew, renew failed caulking at windows and door frames, and apply high-performance paints and stains to all exposed surfaces—protecting people’s homes and their most treasured assets for years to come.

So, you can see, over the years, we’ve evolved. While we are proud of our history, today we are much more than a painting company; we are a building renewal company with knowledge and expertise to revitalize and restore buildings for Vancouver’s property managers, property groups, building owners, and engineers
