In the world of building renewal and construction, every project comes with its own unique set of challenges and requirements. The Peace Portal Alliance Church project, completed by WCP Building Renewal, is a great example of how expertise, dedication, and collaboration can breathe new life into a structure. In this blog post, we will delve into the key details of this project, highlighting the work it takes to waterproof, restore and renew a building envelope.
The Talented Team
Behind every successful project, there’s a dedicated team of professionals. WCP’s crew of four skilled technicians, led by one of our senior Crew Leads, worked diligently and communicated effectively with all the stakeholders at the Peace Portal Alliance Church project. Their combined expertise, over 60 years, proved invaluable as they worked tirelessly to renew the building.
Building access and a Mobile Command Center
The first challenge of the project was gaining access to every nook and cranny of the building to ensure that the building envelope. To address this, WCP employed specialized forklifts, telehandlers, boom lifts, and stage scaffolding, ensuring that technicians could reach even the most challenging areas. This equipment proved to be essential in carrying out the extensive renovation work.
To streamline the project and oversee the building envelope restoration, three massive site trailers were set up on-site. These served as mobile command centers, housing project managers, equipment, and materials. This centralized approach allowed for efficient communication and organization throughout the five-month endeavor.
Building Restoration from the Ground Up
One of the most significant aspects of the Peace Portal Alliance Church project involved the removal of 11,300 square feet of deteriorated siding and building paper. This extensive undertaking was a crucial step in preparing the structure for its transformation and enhancing the building envelope’s integrity. In addition to the siding, 48 windows were deleted and re-framed to enhance both the aesthetics and functionality of the church while ensuring that the building envelope remained waterproof. These new windows would soon be complemented by a brand-new Tyvek wrapping throughout the entire structure, ensuring durability and protection against the elements.
A whopping 2500 linear feet of sealant was removed and replaced, sealing the church’s exterior against the elements as part of the waterproofing process. This meticulous task was instrumental in preserving the structure for years while improving the building envelope.
Targeted areas of the building where rainscreened 12,000 linear feet of furring strips were installed, ensuring a stable and waterproof foundation for the upcoming transformations. Custom flashings were strategically placed to safeguard against potential issues in the future and transition joints.
To enhance the safety and security of the church, WCP installed 10 new custom security doors. These additions would provide both peace of mind and physical protection for the congregation and the building itself, ensuring the building envelope remained intact.
The Final Touch
No transformation is complete without a fresh coat of paint. In this case, 160 gallons of high-build acrylic paint were applied to the adjacent buildings in the complex, including details like the Bell Tower, Cross and metal structures improving its building envelope’s aesthetics and resilience.
The Power of Collaboration
Last but not least, WCP completed this remarkable restoration project for the Peace Portal Alliance Church in Surrey. Working alongside Engineer Iqbal Grewal, Architect Gord Klassen, and our supplier James Bannochie from Dick’s Lumber and Steve Hudye from PPG, the project was a great team effort. This collaborative spirit was instrumental in overcoming the project’s challenges, ensuring its success, and securing the building envelope’s waterproofing and integrity.
The Peace Portal Alliance Church project is a testament to the dedication and expertise of WCP and its partners. Through the hard work of five talented technicians and a focus on building renewal, restoration, and waterproofing, this structure has been reborn as a symbol of transformation and renewal, with an improved building envelope.
The remarkable effort put into this project serves as a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to breathe new life into a cherished landmark.
Most importantly, it has resulted in a happy congregation and an iconic real estate asset renewed for the long term, with a secure and enhanced building envelope.
